The Beaches (Praias)

One of the Algarve’s greatest attractions is its beaches. Whether you prefer long sandy stretches with ample facilities or tiny isolated coves, you won’t be disappointed.

All of the Algarve’s sandy beaches are of a golden colour not found anywhere else in the Mediterranean.

Cabanas Island Beach

This is a naturally formed beach island separated from the mainland by the River Formosa. It is reached by small and inexpensive water taxis running from the edge of the river, very close to the apartment.

Ilha de Tavira

Just west of Cabanas, the Ilha de Tavira has a long beach backed by dunes on the seaward side of the island. Often good for surfing. It is reached by ferry from the river quayside in Tavira.

Eastwards from Cabanas, the beaches are all long, open strands, excellent both for children and the elderly. They stretch for almost 20km along to Vila Real de Santo Antonio, which sits on the Guardiana river, the border between Portugal and Spain.
