The Beaches (Praias)
One of the Algarve’s greatest attractions is its beaches. Whether you prefer long sandy stretches with ample facilities or tiny isolated coves, you won’t be disappointed.
All of the Algarve’s sandy beaches are of a golden colour not found anywhere else in the Mediterranean.
The nearest beach to the apartment is PRAIA DA GALÉ, about 15 minutes walk or less than 5 minutes by car. The extensive sandy beach has a number of outcrops of rocks creating sheltered little coves, ideal for sunbathing. There is a restaurant overlooking the sands and sea.
Westwards along the Galé beach, there are several other ‘Praias’ extending to the big family beach at ARMAÇÃO DE PÊRA. This can also be easily accessed by road from the town. The eastern part of this beach is a vast golden dune and the west a series of rocky coves.
Further west there are numerous stretches of sand and sandy coves including PRAIA DA CARVOEIRO, a sandy cove immediately in front of the village, often crowded in summer because of its location and easy access. Nearby are other secluded beaches, some of which can only be reached by sea. Also of special interest are the striking rock formations of the Algar Seco. Boat trips are available to the coves and grottoes.
Also on the list of the top 10 beaches is PRAIA DA ROCHA, one of Algarve’s most famous beaches. It has a huge expanse of sand just outside the Arade breakwaters, but fronting on to the sea rather than the river. Interesting rock formations, especially to the west towards Praia do Vau. There is a very good surfing spot near the pier.
Further west at Lagos is PRAIA DONA ANA, a lovely, longish beach well sheltered from the west winds by high cliffs. Ideal for children, but not for the elderly because access is down long, steep steps. Boat trips are available to visit caves and grottoes. A good place for scuba diving.
Eastwards from the beach at Galé there are numerous ‘Praias’ towards Albufeira and beyond. Listed among the 10 best is PRAIA DA FALÉSIA a very long stretch of sand backed by cliffs at one end.
Further east beyond Viamoura is PRAIA DA VALE DO LOBO a long stretch of sand, often good for windsurfing.
